Dry Needling Treatment

Treating Muscle Pain and Mobility Issues

Dry needling differs from acupuncture in that the needles are placed into muscular trigger points—sensitive, tight bands in your muscles—to help manage neuromusculoskeletal pain and mobility issues. Fewer needles are used in comparison to acupuncture. The goal of dry needling is to reduce pain and tightness, reduce referred pain and help achieve a greater range of motion. It also helps improve chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia.

Treating Musculoskeletal Issues

Dry needling can be used to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal issues including:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Lower back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Shoulder/rotator cuff pain

  • Sciatica

  • Muscle spasms

  • Headaches

  • Shoulder pain

  • Temporomandibular pain (TMJ)

What To Expect During Treatment

Dry needling is a safe and effective treatment option for patients suffering from tight muscles, trigger point pain and reduced mobility. After discussing if this is the right treatment for you, Dr. Aslanis of Aslan Acupuncture will insert needles into the trigger points of your muscles. The needles may stay in your muscles for only a few seconds, or up to twenty minutes, depending on factors such as the tightness level of your muscles and what area is being treated. When the needles are inserted, your muscles may twitch or spasm for a brief period of time. As the muscles relax, you usually feel immediate relief.

Are There Any Risks?

When a needle is inserted into your muscle, your muscle may twitch briefly, which can feel uncomfortable, and you might feel some soreness. Like acupuncture, dry needling is a low-risk treatment. However, you may feel some soreness in the trigger points of your muscles. After treatment, the soreness may continue, but staying hydrated and moving your muscles will help.
