Acupuncture and Dry Needling
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that originated in China over 3,000 years ago and embraces the whole body view of healing. Dr. Diane Aslanis is pleased to offer acupuncture and dry needling as part of an integrative medicine discipline that incorporates holistic modalities of treatment. Acupuncture is minimally invasive and has been shown to help patients restore and maintain their physical well-being. Dr. Aslanis offers acupuncture as a complementary medical treatment that can be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatments.
Acupuncture utilizes thin needles inserted into the skin at certain points to stimulate the body’s natural healing capabilities. These points are known as acupoints and they typically run along specific pathways or meridians throughout the body. When the energy in the body, qi (pronounced “chee”), is in balance, the body is healthy. Acupuncture therapy can help balance the body’s energy and stimulate function within the nervous system, endocrine system and digestive system. This stimulation can evoke the natural healing powers in the body and help to resolve pain, improve sleep, improve digestive function and enhance the sense of well-being.
Dr. Aslanis is a certified acupuncturist and uses acupuncture to treat a variety of symptoms such as:
- Low back pain
- Headache
- Shoulder pain
- Foot pain
- Sciatica
- Menstrual cramps
What is dry needling?
Dry needling differs from acupuncture in that the needles are placed into muscular trigger points to help manage neuromusculoskeletal pain and mobility issues. The goal of dry needling is to reduce pain and tightness, reduce referred pain and help achieve a greater range of motion. Dry needling can be used to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal issues including:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Low back pain
- Sciatica
- Shoulder/rotator cuff pain
Dry needling is a safe and effective treatment option for patients suffering with tight muscles, trigger point pain and reduced mobility.
